Let’s start by admitting up front: There is no perfect equation, system, or process for choosing a blog name. Sometimes a name comes to a blogger at random, in the middle of the night.
Others take hours of brainstorming. But the following tips eventually guide you to a blog name that works for you.
- Don’t Overthink It
Many of us can stress over the naming of a blog, but you should try not to let yourself get all worked up. “This is a fun and important step because your blog name is your brand. It’s how you’ll be remembered,” blogger Neil Patel says. “But don’t overthink it, the key is to take action and gain momentum.”
It’s possible to establish a successful blog that has an average name but excellent content. But the opposite — a profitable blog with a great name and average content — is pretty much impossible.
The name is only one component. Give it some thought, but don’t overthink it.
- Short and Sweet
The best blog names are short and sweet. A single-word domain name is ideal, but the odds are you won’t be able to come up with one of those.
Nearly all of those names have long been gobbled up and you’ll have to pay a very pretty penny for one if it’s not already in use.
That being the case, two- or three-word names are the next best thing. There’s still an abundance of those domains available if you get creative.
What you want to avoid at all costs is a long domain name that’s complicated and difficult to read as well as type.
- Think of Your Audience
Everything is about the audience. In order to attract readers, you have to take their wants, needs, and preferences into account. Even though you might not have a clear idea who your readers will be, you should be able to make a few assumptions based on the likely target of the niche content you intend to provide.
“List some characteristics of your ideal target audience,” blogger Melissa Culbertson suggests. “You want your blog name to resonate with them. For example, if your blog readers love that you make them laugh, then a bland name won’t be as effective as a name with a tinge of humor.”
- Try a Name Generator
Not feeling particularly creative? Want a couple of extra options? There’s nothing wrong with using a domain name generator to see what other ideas might be possible.
Here’s a good list of generators worth trying. Each one operates a bit differently, but all you have to do is type in your desired niche, a couple of keywords, and other criteria related to extensions and word length.
If nothing else, you’ll be exposed to some new ideas that might be leveraged in the future.
- Avoid Naming No-No’s
Although you have a ton of flexibility for naming your blog, you should stay away from certain elements. These include numbers, hyphens, and misspelled words.
If you’re ever thinking about including one of these, take a moment to ponder how often you’ll be using the name. Do you really want to have to deal with spelling out your blog’s name every time you tell somebody about it?
It’s much easier to go with two or three words that can be spelled with ease.
