Remember when you were newly introduced to the internet. That cute little blue “e” on the task panel of your desktop; indicating a new and unexplored world to dive into. Who would have thought that little sign would become one of the most powerful symbols in global communication? Over time, internet evolved from a mere tool into a modern day necessity. More and more ventures joined in to take a slice of the cyber cake. One of the major players of this arena today is Mozilla.
Mozilla already introduced Firefox. Now, Wolff Olins commissioned a series of illustrations for the new mascot of Firefox OS. The responsibility was passed on to the seasoned hands of Mike Abbink.
A person not familiar with the ins and outs of advertising and designing would never know what extended thought process, numerous fly by nights and tons of ground work compile to create a final design; worthy of being shared with the world. However, being an advertiser myself, I am able to look deep into Abbink’s work and appreciate it accordingly.
As the name suggests, the only choice for a mascot for Firefox OS could have been the fox. The fox has always being associated to being conniving and sly. However, the challenge here was to create a mascot that was bold as well as being simple and friendly.
There was a series of sketches and illustrations that after much pondering led to the final version of the mascot. The final result was a brilliant illustrated fox in a fusion of red and orange, with a long tail depicting lashes of fire; hence the name Firefox was justified. Next came the communication campaign and it was at par with the mascot. Using the line, “Blaze Your Own Path” it was officially announced that Firefox OS is your tool to surf cyber space with an attitude. As the fox has its bag of tricks, Firefox OS has its arsenal of various user friendly applications that are bound to strengthen its position.
