Lomography is a movement in photography that was founded back in 1991 by a couple of Viennese students after they discovered the LOMO camera, a Russian camera solely distributed by Lomography outside the former Soviet Union since 1995.
The Lomographic Society was originally founded in 1992 and continues with a strong following today. Traditionally, Lomography bases itself on creative and experimental film photography. The students who discovered the LOMO were completely taken and “charmed by the unique, colorful and sometimes blurry” images produced by the Russian LOMO camera, leading to the establishment of The Lomographic Society. Most Lomographic cameras self-produce photographic effects such as “oversaturated colors, extreme optical distortions, rainbow-colored subjects, off-kilter exposure, blurring and alternative film processing, all things usually considered bad in photography.”
We all know of the diverse and creative freedom that comes with photography, but these two Austrian students brought about a whole new dimension to photography. They started off with their crazy Lomophotographic experiments by literally shooting from the hip – often taking mindless, candid shots without even looking through the viewfinder, sometimes with no knowledge of what was being captured on film beforehand or afterwards. The idea was groundbreaking and magnificent – an evolution in free and creative photography that knows no bounds. Today, Lomography is a brand with a cult following, practiced on vintage analog cameras even now and with no real requirement of knowledge of the technical techniques of photography.
Really, to be a part of the Lomographic rage all you need to do is take your camera everywhere, shoot everything, don’t think – just create. The art of Lomography becomes a part of your life, don’t worry about following any rules, just be experimental and express. Be quick, move fast, shoot and shoot and shoot! Day and night.
