Professional underwater photographer and marine biologist, Alexander Semenov is the genius behind this collection of other-worldly photographs of one of the most magical and mysterious sea creatures, the jellyfish. The Russian biologist and photographer unveiled his underwater jellyfish series under the title of “Underwater Experiments”.
Alexander Semenov’s ethos is his pure and uncompromised love for the sea. A graduate in the field of Zoology and specializing in invertebrate animals, with particular emphasis on squid brains, he first started experimenting with seawater photography by taking pictures of small invertebrates for fun with an old SLR camera in the lab and without any professional lighting and lenses. Try after try into finally achieving some pretty great shots, the whole team felt inspired and invested in a complete set of underwater photography equipment. From that day forth, there was no turning back.
Now shooting in the natural environment of his underwater subjects, the task was not without its hurdles. Alexander recalls, “It was much more difficult, and I spent another two months without any significant results. But when you’re working at something every day, you inevitably get a lot of experience. Eventually I began to get interesting photos — one or two from each dive. Now after four years of practice I get a few good shots almost every time I dive but I still have a lot of things that need to be mastered in underwater photography.”
Semenov documents exquisite underwater life in his photographs, capturing the most elusive creatures suspended in a dream of eternity. Alexander Semenov’s breathtaking muse in most of his photographs is the magnificent Lion’s Mane Jellyfish, also known as the ‘Cyanae Capillata’, which is the world’s largest known species of jellyfish today. Alexander Semenov is currently working with the White Sea Biological Station (WSBS) and organizes all WSBS underwater projects, never diving without his camera in hand.
These images only mark a subtle scratch over the surface of the underwater fantasy world that Alexander Semenov has uncovered for us through his photographs. In the words of Alexander Semenov himself, “…and the most important thing — I love Sea.”
